Slips, 2011
Meant to be hidden? A full slip hangs from the shoulders, usually by means of narrow straps, and extends from the breast to the fashionable skirt length. Lacy. Silky. What could be more feminine? More tenuous? |
Seeds, 2011
Planting seeds is a messy job - at least the way I do it. It's not unlike the way I paint, so when I started playing with some organic seedy shapes I wasn't surprised when they grew on each other in layers, bumps and bruises. They're growing just fine. |
Weatherings, 2010
These constructions are worked from sturdy papers I weathered in the garden over a period of two years. They grew from simple curiosity, "How will they change if I give them some time to ripen outside?" The materials seasoned well and became so much more interesting to work with. |

Summer, 2010
Four summery things. Can't argue with that! |
Anxiety, 2008
"Anxiety is the hand maiden of creativity.” (T.S. Eliot) and “Now is the age of anxiety.” (W.H. Auden) Seems true for me – anxious times, anxious hands, and anxious marks. Agitation. What to do with agitation? Write. Write lines. Draw. Draw lines. (24" x 18", 8 of many) |

Scratches, 2008
Each of these 20" x 16", mixed media canvases represent winter musings
and long nights. |
Pages, 2003
Each of these 12" x 9" mixed media pieces began on pages from a 1940's
hardcover book about landscape design that I was reconstructing. As I
glued, tore, scraped, and generally put the pages through their paces,
the book fell apart. The sturdy, 60-odd-year-old paper allowed quite a
bit of manipulation without being finicky. Although themes and
impressions did develop, I was not hung up on subject matter. Here are
textures and layers and marks; the magic of cracks, under-colors, edges,
and ghosts; the evidence of time and activity. |
Heartworks, 2000
It's 11 o'clock. Do you know where your heart is? Better check...it
could be tangled up in places that are hard to get free from. Yes, we
all have one–well, maybe not the Tin Man. Heart images express
emotional conditions and are flexible containers for visually exploring
this curious territory. |
Paper Dolls, 1997
A major theme of my work is children responding to their environments.
The "Paper Dolls" series investigates commercial society's pressure on
our daughters. I am intrigued by paper dolls as a universal symbol for
feminine popular culture. This mixed media series deals with the war
between internal and external identity, literally showing both sides
opposing each other. Just how easy are those tabs to unfold and remove? |
